X-tang tonneau covers, better known as Extang tonneau covers, includes any of the soft or hard truck tops manufactured by the Extang Corporation. Their purpose is to produce a more streamlined pickup truck all the while providing a blanketed storage space in the back of the pick-up truck. Many truck cover makes and models, including Extang, can be purchased locally or online. A lot of X-tang tonneau cover competitors include rugged hard tops decked out with hinged doors on the top side affording the driver unfettered admittance to the pick-up's bed.

Some additional hard top truck tonneau covers can be hoisted up and held in mid-air by way of metal or fibreglass shafts, much like the staffs that support quite a few open car hoods. One particular X-tang tonneau cover, a folding model, can be opened from either end of the truck bed. Alot feature paneled covers, where panels can slide back and forth letting truck owners load or take away stuff from the bed. Some additional retractable tonneau lids include made from soft goods much like vinyl and roll up whenever someone want to access the truck bed.

X-tang tonneau covers lessen the pickup’s drag, which helps increase the pick-up’s acceleration. Since Extang tonneau covers wrap over the truck cargo box, that rush of air can't burst into the storage box, thus meeting token opposition at the tailgate of the truck bed. At one time, vehicle owners were given the choice of replacing the basic aluminum truck tailgate using a kind of plastic or fabric netting to diminish the effects of drag.

While such "tailgate nets" indeed tend to lessen the effects of drag, they don't grant as much protection for cargo in the rear of of the truck as does an X-tang tonneau cover. Nets aren't as sturdy as a metal tailgate and it tends to cheapen much more easily. Nets, more than once, have come unhooked, leaving articles to fall out of the pick-up truck bed especially if the truck is motoring at highway speeds. Tailgate alternatives also bring down the looks of the truck, making it look sloppy or broken-down. Extang tonneau covers make for a vastly secure truck bed while simultaneously affording your pick-up a really classic look.

Specific Extang models include:

Revolution - designed to be an easy-open/easy-close cover utilizing a side sealing system that's similar to a "Zip-Loc" bag a customized for each specific truck make and model. The thinking here is to eliminate any clumsy snaps or Velcro that, let's face it, loses its attachability over time. Also, the clamp-on-only, no drill installation should entice new truck owners who don't want to drill any holes. As with most X-tang covers, the Revolution boasts a lifetime warranty (that is, for as long as you own the truck). Warranties are non-transferable.

Black Max - this cover is for those who like all black. The tarp is black and so is the accompanying hardware. Button snaps make it easy to gain access to the truck bed from any point. A nice selling point is that the snaps can be adjusted to fine-tune tension on the tarp to ensure tautness. Also, the company prides itself on the estimated fifteen minute clamp-on-only installation and affordable price tag (under $250 from most retailers). Additionally, X-tang's warranty covers the tarp for a ten year period while the metal frame is warranteed for life.

Classic Platinum - Extang's best selling tonneau cover over the past twenty years. This particular offering is comprised of an aluminum frame for added strength, weather-adjustable stainless steel and brass snaps to adjust tarp tautness, plus a nylon and polymer-reinforced tarp. When you need to utilize your entire bed and then some, simply unsnap the tarp and roll it to the front of the bed where it is easily secured using industrialized Velcro straps. Again, the tarp comes with a ten-year warranty while the aluminum frame is warranteed for a lifetime.

Solid Fold Tonneau Cover - some people will only be happy with a solid cover. X-tang's solid fold is a three-panel folding hard top that the company says installs faster than any other hard cover. Weighing a mere fifty pounds, it opens and closes easily from either end of the truck bed. Made for the do-it-yourselfer, the cover comes fully assembled and requires no tools for installation. Typically, this type of cover can withstand 200 or so pounds evenly distributed - approximately a heavy load of snow. Not recommended for full-grown adults to stand on.

Other Extang covers include the RT (rolltop) cover, Trifecta 3-panel folding cover, Full-Tilt hinged tonneau, and Tollbox tonneau, designed to acommodate a full-size crossover toolbox.

Combining security with classic aesthetics, X-tang tonneau covers have long proven themselves a beneficial investment for any pickup truck owner.
