A cover for truck beds, more accurately called a truck bed cover or tonneau, constitutes a specific type of cover made from fabric, aluminum, or industrial plastics and intended to protect both the bed and any merchandise contained therein. Such an item serves to minimize the effects of gas-guzzling drag at the same time supplying a covered and protected storage area within the truck's bed. A surprisingly large number of manufacturers and subsequent models can be purchased via any number of establishments across the country. Many truck tonneau covers are equipped with multiple hinged doors on the surface to give the user easy access to the truck's bed.
Other tonneaus are designed to be lifted up and suspended in the air using aluminum or fibreglass shafts, similar to the shafts that support most car hoods raised. Still other tonneau truck cover versions are retractable. Alot have hard retractable tops, where the cover sections slide back and forth letting users load or take away belongings from the cargo box. Various rolltop-style style lids are made from pliable textiles similar to vinyl and can be readily opened, secured and stored should the driver have a compulsion to access the pickup bed.
A cover for truck beds increase the truck’s fuel economy by reducing "drag", and thus improve the truck’s acceleration. Since truck bed covers seal the truck cargo box, air rushing over the truck can't enter the bed, encountering minimal resisting capabilities at the tailgate of the truck bed. Prior to this, truck owners were given the option of displacing the customary oem truck tailgate using a brand of vinyl barrier to reduce wind resistance.
While "tail gate nettings" do diminish the effects of drag, they don't supply the same safekeeping for valuables in the back of the truck like a cover for truck bed will.
