Bed covers, part of the family known as truck bed covers, incorporates any style of top made to fit over the pick-up truck's cargo area. In particular, such an accessory tends to afford a more sleek-look while providing a covered storage area in the bed of the truck. Several different models are available. Many bed covers come already outfitted with multiple hinged covered openings to give the user easy access to the truck's bed.
A lot of truck bed covers are easily lifted up and held up in the air by factory-made or fiberglass poles, comparable to the shafts that suspend most car hoods in an upright position. A lot of tonneau makes and models are retracting. Alot feature retracting tops, whereby panels glide to and fro allowing users to load or remove merchandise from the cargo box. Similar retractable style canopies are assembled from fabric-like fabrics not unlike canvas and roll away should the driver have a need to gain entry to the pickup bed.
Bed covers increase the truck’s drag by reducing "drag", and thus improve the truck’s acceleration. Since truck bed covers close off the truck cargo box, air rushing over the truck can not penetrate the pickup bed, coming upon limited resistance at the tailgate of the truck bed. Before the advent of truck covers, pickup truck operators were given the choice of displacing the regulation steel pick-up truck tailgate utilizing a brand of industrial-type net-like barrier to diminish the effects of drag.
While such "tailgate variations" do decrease any limitations caused by drag, they do not dispense the same surety for freight in the cargo area of the pick-up like a bed cover does. A tailgate alternative is not nearly as hearty as the oem tailgate and it can cheapen quicker. Nets historically have been known to unfasten, leaving cargo to be thrown out of the pick-up truck bed while the truck is operating at high speeds. Door options also devalue the appearance of the pick-up truck, making it seem incomplete or makeshift. Bed covers contribute much more security, simultaneously giving any pick-up a truly high-class look.
